Fishing is so much Fun

I caught a 1 1/2 pound spotted bass, then it caught a 225 pound, dumb beyond measure, fisherman!  Never and I mean never try to hold a bass between your knees to extract a crankbait. Dumb…just plain dumb.

Beat Down at Russell

IMG_0641This is a post I started last year and never finished. By the title I assume either Fred or I had a great day…Going to say it was me…(photo I used before) Fred thinking about what had happened.

On The morning of February 11, 2015 I underwent surgery on my left hand to correct a trigger finger that had become very painful. February was the best time to have this surgery for a man who loves fishing as much as I do. February is notorious for bad weather around here and there was no  exception this year. Fred told me I was just plain lucky cause the two weeks I had to recoup were not fishable anyway. In Fred’s small little brain I am the luckiest fisherman that ever wet a hook and he is the unluckiest SOB that ever set foot in a bass boat. When I catch more or bigger fish than Fred it is my “luck”. When Fred catches more fish, which is very seldom by the way, it is “skill” he says. Fred’s logic in such matters is really twisted and cannot be changed.

Last Thursday I was feeling pretty good, so Fred and I decided to go fishing and we agreed that if I started hurting we would come home. Good Plan! I let Fred drive the boat, mainly because he knows every nook-n-cranny of the Savannah River lakes.  OKAY! That’s all my excuses. Now let’s get to fishing…?

A picture is worth a thousand words.

Trout Fishing

Fred and I went trout fishing the other day, the first time in over thirty years for me. It was a two hour drive to get in the general area of where we were to fish. Another thirty minutes and three turnarounds and we were at Fred’s fishing hole.” Just a short 100 yard walk and we will be fishing” Fred tells me! The first 100 yards was along a field, the next fifty yards were on a pretty clear path through the woods. We came to a path to the left, but Fred said to keep going straight. The trail wasn’t so clear for the next fifty yards. We came to another trail off to the left, but again Fred says to stay on the trail we were on. I questioned Fred’s navigation skills at this point because no one had been on this part of the trail in over a week and I told him so.  But never being here myself I went on and hacked a trail for the next fifty yards, finally coming to a clearing.  never went in the clearing, I stood in the trail, just looking into the clearing. Fred comes up behind me and tells me that we have gone to far…so we turn around finally getting to his fishing hole!

Despite losing a pint of blood to the briars, mosquitoes and stinging gnats, the fishing was fun. Fred caught the limit (5) and I caught three, not bad at all I think. We got back to the truck, I put the fish in the cooler. my rod-n-reel in the back of the truck and I climbed in the cab and turned on the AC. Fred spent another two minutes at the back of the truck sorting his gear out. I will say that Fred is meticulous about his fishing gear. Well he finally got in the truck and off we went, back down the mountain headed home. I backed up to the shed at Fred’s house, so we could clean the trout, about 10:30 that night. I got to the back of the truck to find the tailgate down, no cooler….hence no fish.  The next day my wife told some of her co-workers that I had gone trout fishing. One of them said they bet that the trout tasted good. All my wife could say was ”you would think so”.

Mud Wins-Mud Wins!!!

IMG_0667-1There was a smack down on Lake Russell  today between Fred and I… The other week I posted a photo of Fred on our last fishing trip. I made no mention of who caught what or the most. I just shared a serene photo of Fred and the sunset. Quiet a nice photo I think. Never once did I mention I caught three fish; a crappie, spotted bass and catfish. Nor did I mention that Fred had caught only one fish that day, but today he says it was two. One or two, what difference does it make at this point? (I have heard that somewhere before.)  Well anyway, it shouldn’t make any difference except for the bragging rights that are bestowed on the winner of each trip. Last year Fred wore me out…I don’t recall what the finally tally was, but I do recall Fred gave me a spanking…A pretty good one…

Well today that all changed and changed big time. The first fish of the day was a nice striped bass pictured here. I went on to catch ten more bass to Fred’s three. Fred changed rod and reels figuring he had the wrong type of line, then changed the way he operated the trolling motor. Saying something about back wash?  Being  the nice guy that I  am, I offered Fred the use of my rod and reel…That didn’t set too well with ole Fred, but I had to get that jab in. I could go on and on about Fred’s tactics on trying to keep me from catching more fish that he, but l won’t because I know what goes around comes around…And paybacks can be hell.
